Convert CSV to QBO
Import bank transactions
into QuickBooks.
Free CSV to QBO converter for QuickBooks Online and Desktop. Upload any bank statement CSV, map your columns, and download a .qbo file ready to import. Your financial data never leaves your browser.
Three steps to import any bank statement CSV into QuickBooks.
Download your bank statement as a CSV from your bank's online portal and upload it here. CSVShift auto-detects standard column names — Date, Amount, Description, Reference — and pre-maps them to the correct QBO fields.
Review the column mapping and correct any mismatches. Enter your bank routing number and account number — these are used by QuickBooks to match the imported file to the correct account in your chart of accounts. Select checking, savings or credit card.
Download the .qbo file and import it in QuickBooks Online via Banking → Upload from file, or in QuickBooks Desktop via File → Utilities → Import → Web Connect Files. QuickBooks will recognize the transactions and prompt you to categorize them.
Understanding the QBO format before converting your bank data.
A QBO file is QuickBooks Web Connect format — an OFX (Open Financial Exchange) XML file with a .qbo extension. OFX is an open standard developed by banks and financial software companies to exchange transaction data in a structured, machine-readable format.
When you import a QBO file, QuickBooks reads each transaction's date, amount, payee name, memo and unique ID. It then attempts to match each transaction to existing rules and suggest categories automatically — which is why QBO imports are more powerful than direct CSV imports. The structured format gives QuickBooks enough context to run its matching algorithm.
Most banks offer direct QBO download from their online portal for QuickBooks-connected accounts. But when your bank only offers CSV exports — or when you are importing from a payment processor, e-commerce platform or ERP — you need to convert the CSV to QBO first. That is exactly what this tool does.
Common situations where your bank gives you CSV but QuickBooks needs QBO.
Many smaller banks, credit unions and international banks only offer CSV statement downloads. Converting to QBO lets you import these into QuickBooks with full transaction detail, bypassing the limited direct bank feed integration.
Stripe, PayPal, Square and Shopify all export transaction history as CSV. Converting these to QBO lets you import the revenue and fee transactions directly into QuickBooks without manual entry or complex API integrations.
Corporate Amex, Visa and Mastercard programs often export employee expense data as CSV. Converting to QBO produces a file that QuickBooks can import and match to the correct credit card account automatically.
When migrating from another accounting system to QuickBooks, transaction history is typically exported as CSV. Converting the historical data to QBO allows bulk import of past transactions to populate your QuickBooks ledger.
What each field does in the QBO file and which CSV column to use.
| Field | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Date * | Yes | Transaction posting date. CSVShift auto-detects ISO (2024-01-15), US (01/15/2024), EU (15/01/2024) and compact (20240115) formats. |
| Amount * | Yes | Transaction amount. Negative values are debits (money out), positive are credits (money in). Parentheses like (50.00) are treated as negative. Use separate Debit/Credit columns if your bank uses two columns. |
| Description | Recommended | Payee or merchant name. QuickBooks uses this to match transactions to existing payees and suggest categories via its rules engine. |
| Memo | Optional | Additional transaction detail. Appears in the QuickBooks memo field alongside the description. |
| Reference / ID | Optional | Check number or unique transaction ID. Used as the FITID (Financial Institution Transaction ID) in the QBO file — QuickBooks uses this to prevent duplicate imports. |
| Bank / Routing number | Recommended | Your bank's routing number. QuickBooks uses this to match the QBO file to the correct bank account in your chart of accounts. |
| Account number | Recommended | Your bank account number. Must match the account number configured in your QuickBooks bank account settings for automatic matching. |

Bank data processed
with full privacy.
Bank statements contain your most sensitive financial data — account numbers, transaction amounts, payee names. CSVShift processes the entire CSV to QBO conversion in your browser. Your file is never uploaded to any server, never stored, and never seen by anyone but you.
The routing number and account number you enter are written only into the local QBO file you download. They are not transmitted anywhere. Open the browser's Network inspector during conversion — zero outbound data requests will be made.
